Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard has established himself as one of the best central midfielders in the world in recent years.
The Gunners captain has increasingly established himself as the number eight right-back in Mikel Arteta’s line-up and has repeatedly found the net. Since the start of the 2022/23 season, only five players have scored more unanswered goals in the Premier League than Odegaard.
These numbers are even more impressive when you consider that all five of those players are strikers, while the Norwegian international is a central striker. The former Real Madrid teammate has scored 16 unanswered league goals in the last 12 months, the latest of which came on Sunday in his team’s 3-1 win over Manchester United.
By comparison, United’s creative master Bruno Fernandes has scored six unanswered goals in the same period, ten fewer than Odegaard, making Kevin De Bruyne’s latest inclusion even more surprising. When asked to rank Fernandes, Odegaard and Tottenham’s James Maddison, the Manchester City star put the Portuguese first, Odegaard second and Maddison third.
“I think he is a creative machine, in general,” De Bruyne told Sky Sports, talking about Fernandes. “I think Odegaard is very creative but he is a bit more controlled, Maddison is very creative but I need to see more of him in the big team so that can change. That’s why I put him third.”
When asked why he put the United star over the Arsenal captain, he added: “He has been doing it for a long time. Odegaard was incredible last year but he is obviously younger, so there is a difference between them.”
Former Tottenham Hotspur star Garth Crooks made sure to give Odegaard flowers and put him in his Premier League Team of the Week after the Gunners’ victory over the Red Devils. Crooks told the BBC: “His equalizing goal 35 seconds after Manchester United took the lead was a lifesaver for Arsenal.
“The longer the game went on without that goal, the more desperate we would have been. Odegaard’s finish was first class. The ball came from a difficult angle, so his technique had to be precise – and it was.
“He hit the ball so beautifully that it flew over Andre Onana in the Manchester United goal.
